Mobile Blogging

I have a mobile device with me at all time and a computer only some of the time. I therefore thought I should try out writing and uploading blog posts remotely. I'm writing this post using my iPod Touch while I'm on vacation.

I'm finding that I'm doing more and more using a mobile device. I do the majority of my tweeting, a significant amount of my e-mail, as well as rss reading, facebooking, and even checking my Google Analytics on a mobile device. So, blogging makes sense too.

I'd love to hear about your experiences in using mobile platforms via the commenting mechansim below.

So far I've only been exposed to smart phones and PDAs via other people's devices - and find first time usability sadly lacking. I prefer single effective tool simplicity to Swiss Army Knife complexity and the granola bar effect where a simple wholesome product becomes an over processed candy bar. So I find a laptop and a cell phone have met my mobile needs so far without any great threat of withdrawal symptoms from addiction. ...and I do seem to be vulnerable to addictive behavior, so it's probably best that I have a high threshold on the first use usability factor.

Thanks for your comment, Bob. While I appreciate your tendency toward addictive behavior may be a reason not to get into smart phones, I do think that they really have to be experienced in order to get a true sense of the user interface. I find that the user experience with the iPhone/Touch is far superior to that of computer-based operating systems, a few problems notwithstanding. This is likely due to the clean-sheet approach to design that a new device like this affords. I had first just looked at smart phone like devices, like you, via trying out those of friends and colleagues. However, it was when I got my own that I truly appreciated the user experience. Of course, it now takes some self-control to avoid developing an addition to it.

I just got back from vacation and decided to see how much I could do with a standard cell phone (not a smart phone, but my plain old 3G cell phone). I was able to upload images very easily to my facebook and twitter accounts where my friends and coworkers commented (much to my surprise as I got regular updates sent to me via SMS). I linked my twitter and facebook updates so that one would link to the other and had an overall blast blogging my vacation in real time. I heard from my dean tonight that I had one of the more advertised vacations here at work.

Overall, even a standard cell phone can do quite a bit.

Cheers!
