Publications

I've written a book, a chapter in another, served as the special issue editor of two professional journal editions, and published hundreds of individual scientific and/or professional articles and conference papers. You'll notice that most of this work was published a few years ago when the traditional way of disseminating scientific and professional work was through published books and journals. I have more recently predominantly used Web 2.0 methods including this blog.

Constructing Superior Software

This is the lead book in a series of books from the Software Quality Institute (SQI). This series will bring together some of the key individuals in the Software Engineering community, and through their knowledge and experience, develop a library of books that set the standards for best practices in achieving high-quality software. This title presents a set of fundamental engineering strategies for achieving a successful software solution, with practical advice to ensure that the development project is moving in the right direction. Software designers and development managers can improve the development speed and quality of their software, and improve the processes used in development.

Designing the Total User Experience at IBM

This Special Issue is an examination of case studies illustrating the use of UCD in the development of products and systems as well as research findings and advanced methods work focused on further improving the design of the total user experience itself and the methods used to achieve it.

The articles in this issue are grouped into three sections.  The first characterizes a series of case studies illustrating our use of User-Centered Design in the development of our award winning software product, DB2 Universal Database, our industry leading notebook computer, ThinkPad), our highly successful web design work for the Sydney Olympic Summer Games, and a summary of User-Centered Design consulting work for customers.  The second section of articles features work from our research and development divisions examining a variety of design issues including streaming multimedia web experiences, ubiquitous computing, diagrammatic procedural instructions for complex tasks, and use of auditory waiting cues. The third and final section of articles reports on a variety of projects devoted to enhancing the methods, techniques, and methodologies of User-Centered Design.  These include an article describing an enhancement of Heuristic Evaluation, a psychometric assessment of the widely used PSSUA, ways of optimizing the carrying out of remote user studies, a story-based approach to design, and a rigorous engineering approach for crafting a compelling user experience.

IBM Systems Journal - Ease of Use

As information technology devices and applications grow in number and importance, the significance of ease of use in their design grows apace. In this issue, twelve papers focus on aspects of design for ease of use as applied to the entire design process, from understanding user requirements to conceptual design, prototyping, field testing, and redesigning. The history and future of User-Centered Design (UCD) and User Engineering (UE) are discussed, and case studies illustrating the role of UCD and UE in many fields are presented. Topics include the design of wireless devices, on-screen documentation, and database management and data visualization systems.

The best way to see many but not all articles I've written is via Google Scholar. Here you'll find my work in user experience design but also research in cognitive science and psychology.
